Applying Lexical Equivalent Corpus
Statement of the Problem
انجام پایان نامه زبان انگلیسی : This study aims to investigate Iranian junior B.A. translator trainees’ problem in translating compound-complex sentences. Although lexical equivalent corpus ranging from 6000 to 9000 word families are needed for optimal translation, juniors, like the trainees in the present study, need to have more realistic translational goals when they face up to translate the compound- complex sentences. We know that a relatively small number of word families occur frequently in the language and cover a relatively large proportion of the lexical items in spoken and written discourse. Nation (2006) has found that the most frequent 2000 word families in English will give a lexical coverage of around 85% in translation of the written texts and of 90% in unscripted spoken translation. Hence, it is these high-frequency words that should be the focus of explicit vocabulary in translation well.
If translators do not know the most frequent 2000 or 3000 words in English, they will have severe difficulties in understanding most written and spoken text and it will make it even more difficult to engage actively in written and spoken translation or interpretation. However, if they do know the first 2000–۳۰۰۰ words, it will get them a fairly long way. In this study we have dealt with only one dimension of translators’ lexical competence, namely vocabulary size and its outcome namely corpus. However, another dimension focuses on the quality or depth of translators’ lexical knowledge.
In addition to having a large vocabulary, translators must also know quite a lot about the words in their vocabulary. Deep word knowledge is likely to promote the speed and automaticity with which words can be accessed and activated for receptive and productive use. This means that when translators are giving explicit focus to the most frequent words in the L2 over discussion of translating compound- complex sentences, they should not only concentrate on the form–meaning link of those words but also on other aspects such as their word parts, collocations, synonyms and register constraints (cf. Nation’s (2001) table of word knowledge components).
So, there is no doubt that translators need depth as well as breadth in their vocabulary in order to communicate adequately in a foreign language. The present study has provided some empirical evidence of the importance of vocabulary breadth for foreign language proficiency. However, more research is needed into the role of lexical corpus running compound- complex sentences interpretation or translation however not enough.
On the basis of the research outlined previously, two main research questions have been
addressed in the present study:
(۱) To what extent is applying lexical equivalent corpus associated with achievement of
translation the compound- complex sentences?
(۲) Is it possible to determine a lexical equivalent corpus above which translators are likely
to perform compound- complex translation sentences achievement?
Research main hypothesis:
There is no problem in translation of compound- complex sentences!
